How I Do It – Personalised Pattern
To create a uniquely fitting garment I first draft a paper pattern based on your body measurements, then I make a toile – a test garment. Toile is a great way to visualise the initial dress idea, make design and measurement adjustments, and minimise errors, potentially bringing the material and labour costs down.
Where I Do It
As dressmaking is a venture in addition to my day job, I work from home. This is a place where I have everything I need and where I feel my most creative and productive with added benefit of no overhead costs of a studio.
That also means that appointments can be arranged for most evenings and weekends.
What Fabric I work With
As my workplace is my home and storage space is limited, I do not carry a stock of fabrics. Fabric and colour swatches are available and will be ordered from reliable suppliers (some of them are even local) as and when required. Alternatively, I will be happy to work with the fabric sourced by you, provided it is adequate for the job and of sufficient quantity. Please, also note that if you had the fabric in storage for a while, it may acquire an unpleasant smell, a quick wash and iron may be required.
How much will it cost?
When working to order, complexity of the design will be the main criteria when determining the price, and all aspects of the process (drafting and cutting the pattern, making a toile, fitting and making adjustments, garment construction, final finishing and embellishment) will make up the final price.
As a minimum* it takes
14 hours to make a dress
7 hours to make a skirt
9 hours to make trousers
11 hours to make a blouse
*minimum is determined by the simplest design. Additional features, fabrics that require extra care or attention and particular pattern elements increase difficulty of the garment and time that it takes to make it.
Please note that I am only able to accept projects that are due in minimum 4 weeks.
Before I can start working on the garment, I will require a deposit of £50 that will be redeemable against the final balance.
Once a toile is made and fitted, we will be ready to order the fabric. The payment to cover the full cost of the order will be due at this stage.
I will require full payment of the final balance before or on collection of the garment.
Do I do alterations?
As a general rule, I do not offer alteration or repair services. Please contact me if you are looking to have your existing garment re-modelled. Please, note that this may not always be possible.
